Monthly Archive for February, 2006

Last weekend

It was as hectic as things can get. I have Fridays off and hence I have 3 day weekends. From Thursday night to Monday morning, the time just flew by.

I have been sleeping at 5am or 6am on all the nights and have been getting up without getting barely any sleep. Eating a meal once a day and living on coke and snacks all the time.

My advisor is working on a paper and I am providing some content for it and have had to work with loads of new apps and new stuff that I have had no idea about. I have been experimenting for about 10 days now with that stuff and have come up with nothing worth putting in a paper.

Other than that I have to work on the assignment for the Parallel Processing course. This is something that is again new to me and I have googled but not found any good tutorial on MPICH. The worst part is that the cluster that I am working on doesn’t run a debugger (I have looked and found nothing). The multiple processes keep dying for no apparent reason and I have spend hours trying to figure it out.

Then there is the tension of preparing for job interview… well the interview will come after I app.. which is another thing I haven’t started yet.

Bottom line… I worked my ass of and at the end of it, I feel like nothing significant was really achieved. Pisses me off completely…. x-(

The Thing About My Folks

A really heart-warming movie that tells a story of a father and son and how they get to know each-other better when the father turns up unannounced when the mother leaves him and goes away leaving behind a note. The father and son duo end up spending a lot of time together on an unplanned road trip.

Peter Falk has given a brilliant performance as the father.

It’s a slow paced drama filled with humor. I loved this movie. It’s a high quality flick and I give it 8.5/10.

Indiana Jones

Just got into the mood and started watching the Indiana Jones movies. I don’t know but Harrison Ford looked as old in those movies as he does today…. is that a compliment or not… I cant say :-P

Anyways…. I was under the impression that there were 4 movies in that series, but the 4th one is scheduled to be released in 2007 and it will have the same actor as Indiana Jones.

The first two movies were good… Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I mean they were good if you think of what people might like at that time and what I would have loved to see as a 12 year old. The stunts in that movie just seem too funny now… The third part, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is based on India and Amrish Puri and Roshan Seth acted in it. I actually had to skip thru the ending…

All in all, it was a fun watching these movies. All the three parts have won Oscar and loads of nominations. Had I been a kid I would give these movies 9/10 but now I think 7.5/10 is good enough.

The Pink Panther

A nice movie with a great performance by Steve Martin. I was actually expecting to see a pink colored animated panther running around in the movie being chased by Steve Matin as the cop, but what I actually saw was good too. It’s a comedy flick and hence logic can’t be applied to most of the things in it. Other than a couple of scene which were meant to be funny but turned out really stupid, the movie was hilarious.

I really liked the movie and would recommend all to watch it. I give it 7/10.

9/11 Loose Change 2nd Edition

YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS !

This is a documentary on the 9/11 attacks. I saw it on Google Videos. It’s an amazing documentary that tries to show how the whole 9/11 attacks were staged by the US government itself for forwarding it’s war agenda. It’s very comprehensive and offers good evidence in support of it’s claims using actual TV coverage of the attacks, interviews, newspaper reports and other documents.

The producers of this documentary have really put forth a good case. It’s one documentary that you should not miss. You can watch it here and read more about it here.

Casanova

A nice funny movie about Casanova which is set in his times but portrays his as we know him today. Heath Ledger has done a good job and has acted marvelously. The tag line of the movie is

A partially true story about lies told, virtue lost and love found.

I started read about Giacomo Casanova on wikipedia and apparently he wasn’t at all like we think of him today.

Anyways, I give the movie 6.5/10.

BloGTK 1.1 on SuSE Linux 10.0

Installed SuSE Linux 10.0 Evaluation version today and was generally looking around for a weblog client for Linux and found BloGTK v1.1. It’s not exactly what I am looking for, but then there are very few things in linux that are just the way I want them ;-)

Anyways, lets see how long I stick with this OS before I shift to Ubuntu or someother Linux distro… hehe..

UPDATE: BloGTK aint all that good. You can’t specify the categories and neither is there an option of uploading pics. hmm.. will look for something else..

Annapolis

hmm.. u take a really old forumla and make a new movie out of it. There is a guy with an attitude problem, who has always wanted to be a Naval Officer and he gets his shot at it when he gets selected to goto US Naval Academy at Annapolis. He has tough seniors, falls in love with a lady officer, gets into a boxing tournament and finally by other people’s help is able to make it to the finals and all this expirence has left him a totally changed man.

That pretty much sums up the movie. I like fighting and I like movies on defence forces, so I liked it… but not all that much. I give it 6.5/10.

King Kong

It wasn’t the planes, it was… the beauty killed the beast.

The last line of the movie pretty much sums up what it was all about. A well directed movie with great animations. 3 Hours for this movie was a bit too much and at times I felt the movie has just been stretched uselessly. Naomi Watts is looking so beautiful in this movie. She looks so fragile, yet none of her bones are broken when the ape is running around with her in his hands. The fight scenes with the dinosaurs and the stampede were well created, but it kind of made you laugh, cause they were kind of un-realistic considering the people in the scenes.

All in all… a really nice movie. I give this movie a 7.5/10.

My Haircut

After about 5 months, I finally got my hair cut today. It was sad seeing all that hair being cut off, but in a way I was happy as it was a big weight off my shoulders… umm.. head.. They were getting unmanageable; were growing in all directions and were breaking all the time and there were countless knots… Anyways, I am kinda happy that I don’t have to take care of such long hair again. I really don’t know how girls are able to manage such long hair.

I have put here a few pics of my hair. These were my hair while I was in Delhi.
