I have been reading SCJP for Java 5 Study Guide by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates. It’s a very well written book, but there is one very weird thing… Whenever the authors have referred to the users, it is in the female gender.. as in “The user should make note of this so that she does not mess up the exam”.
The two places where I remember seeing this usage in the book are:
- When a programmer creates a class, she creates methods for that class.
- It’s quite possible that the developer enhancing class B has no knowledge of class A, why would she?
now… now… I am not a MCP… but this is the first book that I have seen written this way. And… I must admit, it’s quite funny to refer to programmer and developer as “she”. I know many females who are good at coding and developing, but still, it’s just funny… Just seems weird as I have always seen the readers and users being referred to as males or males/females.
My Master’s advisor suggests the best way to get out of this problem. Simply refer to the users in plural. So, I could change the above sentence to “The users should make note of this so that they do not mess up the exam”. Might make the whole thing a little more impersonal, but definitely better than using he or she.
I didn’t brush my teeth yesterday night…
I had a dentist’s appointment on June 7th and every night since that day, I had been brushing my teeth… unless of course I just fell dead on my bed after a long day…
Yesterday night was different, I was there in the bathroom… I saw the toothbrush and the toothpaste… and I decided not to brush… I feel so ashamed… why ? why ?? why did I not brush my teeth ?
sucked…
The weather wasn’t all that great… it was really hot during the day and it rained the night when we camped… couldn’t go trekking cause everyone wasn’t ready. Mt Rushmore isn’t that big of a deal… many might not agree with that statement, but I was really disappointed after sitting in a car for 15 hours. Ohh… and the car… it was another experience in itself… Six people with a lot of luggage were packed tightly into a Mercury Mountaineer… On the way back we got a ticket as well…
I guess just because my experience wasn’t all that great (because of the things mentioned above… and many that I can’t mention here), I feel that the weekend was a waste… South Dakota is a nice place… it makes sense passing though SD or staying there over night when you are out on a long road trip. Making a trip to SD, doesn’t make any sense.
