Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Finished reading this last night and it left me quite sad… I already knew that Dumbledore would die in the novel, but still… Anyways… I am happy to have finished reading all the novels as now I can peacefully take a break from this series… It’s quite stupid but I have actually started thinking how much better my life would be with all the magic described in the books. It’s something like wanting to have the Staple’s EASY button.

One thing that was good about this novel was that it wasn’t as difficult a read as the one before it… In The Order of the Phoenix, it was heart wrenching to be in Harry’s shoes all the time… He was portrayed as being so very helpless… but in this novel at least thats not the case. Also, this novel makes for a good setting for the next and the last novel.

There are many rumors going around about how it’s all going to end… I find myself discussing it now and again with people… well… everyone will come to know in July… :-)

cat killings

Came across this great (but inaccurate) statistical analysis of relationship (or lack of it) between masturbation and cat killings on Digg… :) quite funny…

A TOI article on VTech Shootings

Let me start by saying that I am sorry for the loss of lives at VTech… Its a sad thing happened and my way dealing with it is to not think about it… or talk about it…

But… I really wanted to write this post about an article related to VTech shootings in TOI that I read and the brilliant work of journalism that it shows… It talks about the two victims of Indian origin. As at that point of time there was no official new of who the Indian student was, it was difficult to get any information about the student… armed with only the name, the journalist visited Orkut and wrote the following in the news article:

According to reports from the campus, friends were searching for an Indian student, Minal Panchal, who has been reported missing.

Minal Panchal has her Orkut scrapbook full of prayers hoping she is fine and urgent pleas to respond and tell her near and dear ones that she is safe.

A friend mentions that he has heard about the shootout and asks if she is fine. From then on there is a deluge of worried messages.

Minal, who hails from Mumbai, lists her occupation on the networking website as an architect. Her personal profile describes her as a tall, slim, attractive young girl.

Now there are two things about this report that really amaze me… Firstly, it goes to show how much can be uncovered about a person from his/her profile(s) in the various social networking sites. I have personally googled and searched orkut, if needed, for random people who have contacted me before getting back in touch with them.

Secondly, the reporter actually considers it a brilliant piece of investigative journalism to put information from someone’s profile into a new report… I mean really… how much truth does one put up there in the profiles ? Would some one in the personal profile say that he/she is short, obese, unattractive guy/girl ? and how does saying “Her personal profile describes her as a tall, slim, attractive young girl.” amount to news ?

It’s crap like this that makes me read TOI less and less… You go to TOI thinking you will read up something neat and you end up finding reports like this…

FY 2008 H1-B Cap reached

4/10/2007 3PM Update: I just received this in mail. Please consider this as unconfirmed:
“It has just been announced that advanced degree H-1B’s quota has not been met. There are about 7,000 left. If you have a candidate in the process that already has a US Masters or above, please move quickly with them as we can not say how quickly the last of the quota will be used up. Please let me know if you have any questions.”

As many people in the same boat as I, would already know, the H1-B cap for FY 2008 has been reached. Unlike last year, it didn’t take it until May 26th to fill. This time, USCIS had received more than 150,000 applications by April 3rd itself. It’s now going to use the lottery system to decide the fate of so many people. You can read about it(pdf).

My application falls under the Master’s quota that gives me a better chance of landing with a H1. The thing is , folks at USCIS still don’t know how many of the 150000+ applications are filed under the Master’s quota.

So, in my case, the following algorithm applies:

numTotalApps = 200000; //estimates from some people online
numMSQuotaApps = <some unknown figure>;
if ( applicationsLimitAlreadyReached ) {
if ( numMSQuotaApps < 20000 ) {
System.out.println("You should in all probability get the H1-B. So chill and concentrate on work.");
} else {
System.out.println("You probability of getting H1-B is " + 20000/numMSQuotaApps + ". Best of Luck !");
}
} else {
System.out.println("There is a high probability that there will be 20000+ apps already in the " + numTotalApps + " already received. Please sit and hope that everything works out.");
}

Anyways, I just hope I don’t get screwed over. After all the effort I put into getting my OPT fixed, if I don’t end up with a H1-B, my visa adviser back at school is going to be very disappointed.

And… just a few thoughts on this whole lottery system. I think to an extent it is unfair from start itself, because USCIS is going to consider all the 150000+ applications in the lottery. It’s unfair because:

  • I feel preference should be given to people already sitting here in US before anyone else. We are already settled here, working and being productive.
  • Companies should be divided in some sort of tier and based on the quality of company, applications from one company should be given preference over applications from another. This would make sure that people who take the easier route (going though consultants), have less chances that someone who got the job directly in a company.
  • Many Indian companies apply for H1’s for their employees who aren’t maybe going to come here for the next year or so. In such cases, these applications are just getting wasted. So, again I feel applications from with-in US should have a precedence over applications from outside of US.

Do note… I say these things because of the situation I am in. If I had joined a consultant (which I was going to at a point of time), or had I graduated at a time when I had to apply for H1 with out my Master’s degree… I would have talking about something else here.

Hindustan Times BETA

I read Hindustan Times regularly to keep up-to-date with happenings back in India and recently I noticed that they were coming out with a new site design and layout. Today they seem to have made the Beta version the default on the site. If you read other newspapers online, it wont take much of an effort to see that the whole redesign of HT is inspired from NY Times.

Inspired from NYT ? it’s more like HT is a carbon copy of NYT. Starting from heading, navigation, content layout to fonts, everything seems a lot like NY Times. It’s just that HT is a bit more colorful, something that we Indians love, and there are a lot of advertisements (which I successfully block using Adblock FF ext.).

Folks at HT should give some sort of credit to NYT at least… Here are the screenshots of the two sites:

Austin Powers

Was getting bored yesterday and didn’t feel like doing anything constructive, so I went ahead and watched all three Austin Power movies. Had seen them before in bits and pieces, I knew that I should expect utter stupidity…

The first, International Man of Mystery, was best amongst all three and I just couldn’t stand Goldmember, the last one. But considering that there was nothing else that I wanted to do, they were decent enough to get by the boring Sunday afternoon and evening. What I liked most about the three movies was that there was no nudity or obscene language used and it was full of puns. They did tend to get gross at more that one occasions.

p.s. Liz Hurley is hot in Part I… :-)
