Very nice them, I like the futuristic look, while keeping the simplicity of the original Hemingway design. Thanks!

  2. Michal 02.20.07 / 4am
    2

    Congrats! Looking great, easy using…

  3. ttancm 02.20.07 / 5am
    3

Very nice looking theme, but none of the background pngs show up in IE 6 so all the menus end up white, and kind of ruin the theme.

  4. Ron 02.20.07 / 6am
    4

Looks great! But..do I need extra plugins?? My recent comments saids that “comments are closed. is it correct that there is no link and archive page?

  5. Nalin 02.20.07 / 10am
    5

    Chris, Micheal: Thanks

ttancm: I just saw the issue too. I only tested the theme with IE7 and FF. I’ll fix the issue and work on a couple other things and come out with another zip soon.

Ron: Some of the blocks need external plug-ins to work. If you dont have them, dont use the blocks.

  6. Ron 02.20.07 / 10am
    6

But what about the “comments are closed”?? I’d like to see my recent comments in a block… What external plugins do I need to have the blocks work??

  7. Chris 02.20.07 / 5pm
    7

    Nalin,

The option to change the excerpt length doesn’t appear to work (WP 2.1). I have to say again, I really love how you’ve updated this excellent theme!

  8. Nalin 02.20.07 / 6pm
    8

Yes, stupid of me… didnt push in that code in functions.php. Another thing to fix in the next release.

  9. Chris 02.20.07 / 6pm
    9

Another thing (sorry to bother you so much, but I am working on the theme right now). The theme is also messed up in IE7 (the right column in the bottombar moves to the bottom of the center column). Both mine and your site look like this.

I was able to change it using the instructions on this post.

So ultimately, I had to change style.css to:

    #ancillary .block{
    float:left;
    padding: 1%;
    width: 28%;
    margin:0 0 0 3%;
    background: transparent url(images/transparent_bg.png) repeat left top;
    }

I did notice a change in Firefox (2) when I made this change, so I’m not sure how much I like it.

  10. Nalin 02.20.07 / 6pm
    10

hmm… I have been working on this theme using a 1920×1200 screen at home and 1600×1200 screen at office. Havent seen that problem I guess because of all the high resolution.

It’s a width issue. I would love to fix everything for IE6 and IE7, but I am not in that much love with IE. Works fine for FF and thats what matter the most to me. will look for a work around….

  11. Chris 02.21.07 / 4am
    11

Thanks for the all the bug fixes!

  12. Ron 02.21.07 / 7am
    12

I think the Tags in the Tagcloud don’t work….

  13. Jim 02.21.07 / 7am
    13

Hm, your ‘About’ field does something weird - on the front page, it does show the text from my ‘About’ page, but then it also includes the entire text from the most recent entry, as well. In addition, clicking through to any page will replace all text in the ‘About’ field with the text from that page.

  14. Jim 02.21.07 / 7am
    14

Nevermind. As usual, the Adhesive plugin likes to screw everything up.

  15. Phrodo_00 02.21.07 / 7am
    15

Hi, I’ve added support for category-tagging into the tags block (it’s working in my site). are you interested in the feature? if so, just tell me =D, I’ll mail you the thing.

  16. Ron 02.21.07 / 8am
    16

My Related Post list on the Postpage is sometimes very long. How can I maximize it to 5 related posts??

  17. Nalin 02.21.07 / 8am
    17

Ron: Please read up on UTW3 and see how to create templates for Tags and Archives using the UTW3 functions. Based on the templates, you need to add pages into your blog. I’ll see if there is something I can do for that at my end.

Jim: I think it’s some plugin at ur site. Everything is fine with the ‘About’ field.

    Phrodo_00: will mail you.

  18. Nisha 02.21.07 / 9am
    18

    Nice theme!! Impressive :-)

  19. Angel 02.21.07 / 9am
    19

    A lot of thanks.

  20. Jim 02.21.07 / 1pm
    20

Yeah, I fixed it. As I said up above, it was a problem with the Adhesive plugin (again), which is a shame. Adhesive has the potential to be a really good plugin, but it breaks just about everything it comes in contact with.

I really like this theme and the way it’s structured. I’d love to see some additional blocks added - like ‘Recent Comments’ and some text and php blocks that would be editable by the administrator. Just some things to think about for future development. Keep up the great work!

    Hemingway Wordpress Themes…

  22. Fruskio 02.21.07 / 4pm
    22

This is a wonderful theme but I have some lil’ problems with it. Everything works fine except permalinks and the search bar. Are these issues related to the UTW plugin?
It’s strange because the tag cloud works well.
    That’s wierd!!!
Hope you have a solution… I’m going crazy!
Thanks again for such a great job!!!!

  23. Nalin 02.21.07 / 6pm
    23

Jim: Those are good ideas.. will definitely add them in the next release. I am also starting to look into widget support.

Fruskio: Don’t know whats the problem that you are facing. I am using the same theme and it works fine for me w.r.t permalinks and the searchbar.

  24. John 02.23.07 / 7pm
    24

First off, thank you for an awesome theme. When I load it in wordpress, it keeps saying Parse error: parse error, unexpected $end in C:\wamp\www\wordpress\wp-content\themes\hemingwayEx\functions.php on line 690

    am I doing something wrong?

  25. Gallagher 02.24.07 / 4pm
    25

It is a great theme… Everyone who has been to my site loves it. For some reason I cannot get my recent posts to show up.

Bear with me, I am still learning.

  26. Nalin 02.24.07 / 4pm
    26

On homepage, you don’t see the latest two posts in the list as they are being displayed. I see that you only have two posts on ur blog

  27. joanne 02.25.07 / 6am
    27

Hi, thanks for the great theme. A weird thing happened. For the navigation, when I initially used it it was ok but now I can’t see the yellow bar - the whole thing is just black. Any ideas what I did wrong?

  28. Nalin 02.25.07 / 11pm
    28

joanne, I think it must be something to do with any changes you made to the theme or maybe the CSS just did not load properly.

  29. Chris 02.26.07 / 2pm
    29

Nalin: The ‘About’ block looks different from some of the other blocks, in that it doesn’t have the extra return/space below it like the ‘Pages’, ‘Archives’, and ‘Recent Posts’ have below them. If you look on my site, the ‘About’ block is closer to the block below it, more so than the blocks in the other columns. Ha, this sounds strange now that I reread it, but let me know if you don’t understand what I am talking about. Thanks!

  30. Nalin 02.26.07 / 4pm
    30

I see what you are talking about. I will fix it. For now, u can fix it by adding a line break to the end of your page.

  31. Chris 02.26.07 / 4pm
    31

Thanks, that worked. Just added to the end of ‘about_page.php’.

  32. Chris 02.26.07 / 4pm
    32

Haha, the code messed up. I added (without any spaces).

  33. mIke 02.27.07 / 11am
    33

    I keep getting this error:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected $end in C:\wamp\www\wp-content\themes\hemingwayEx\functions.php on line 690

I got it with version 0.9beta and now with this version 0.93. I really want to check it out. ANy suggestions?

  34. Mosey 02.27.07 / 11am
    34

Hi, thank you for updating the Hemingway theme :) I was wondering how I would go about adding a category as one of the header-navigation links? I could use a page but it would be more seamless to use a category just for one of the menu options.
    Thank you! :D
    Kind Regards
    Mosey

  35. Flick 02.27.07 / 11am
    35

Hi, thank you for your theme. I’m using your theme on my site at the moment and added a sub-page to ‘The Band’… only to find that its leaving a lot of space (due to the discography subpage) in the top-navigation menu. Is this expected behaviour for the template? :)

I’m new to the Hemingway theme so am not sure what to expect. One thing I noticed was that hovering over ‘The Band’ doesn’t seem to bring up the ‘Discography’ subpage (on Firefox 1.5.0.x) unless I also hover over the black part underneath.

Thank you advance for any help.
    Flick

  36. mIke 02.27.07 / 12pm
    36

Disregard the last comment. I figured it out. I had to change all the php short tags “

  37. Nalin 02.27.07 / 12pm
    37

mIke: will remove the short tags in the next release. Didn’t have the issue while coding, so forgot to check for it.

Mosey: http://codex.wordpress.org/Designing_Headers should help you out with what you want to do. You will have to edit header.php and manually add the link to the category

Flick: The horizontal menu is only meant to display top pages. I don’t understand, why is ur subpage being picked up. The depth in wp_list_pages() should be 1.

  38. Flick 02.27.07 / 2pm
    38

Nalin - thank you for your reply. Sorry, my bad there - I’d quite forgotten I’d change the code to display as page order, instead of alphabetically. Didn’t realise it would make such a big difference (new to Wordpress as well) if I used:

Thank you for replying though! :) Its probably more ideal for me to have the submenu so I’ll try and play around with it.

  39. Rod 02.27.07 / 3pm
    39

I think Ultimate Tag Warrior is “has been” … if you could realize a realease with the ONLY tag system updated (you can import UTW + Jerome’s Keywords) … Simple Tagging … and it will be perfect ! :)

  40. Mosey 02.27.07 / 4pm
    40

UTW was actually updated quite recently.

    Nalin - thanks. I’ll take a look!

  42. Nalin 02.28.07 / 9am
    42

Jane: Yes, that is one of the sites that inspired this theme. But other than the Slidebar, there isn’t much similarity. I am just trying to incorporate all the goodies that I see online, depending on my coding skills.

  43. Mosey 02.28.07 / 3pm
    43

    Hi Nalin,
Sorry to bother you again. I was wondering (re: post 21/02/2007) if you’ve had a chance to add the new pages at all? I’m a little bit confused as to why if I try and click on the ‘tag’ to load the page - ie. mydomain.com/tag/tag-name (from UTW) it just loads the main index page without showing a list of posts with the tags. I’m sure its a really obvious step I’m missing out, but I’mfinding the official UTW documentation more than a little confusing.
    Thanks! :)
    Kind Regards
    Mosey

  44. Neil 02.28.07 / 9pm
    44

Nice theme…but I just added it to my blog and immediately noticed a bit of a bug.

Your get_excerpt function for the front page has the potential to break layouts, because you’re not doing any checking to close any HTML tags that need to be closed. I noticed this because the second post on the front page of my test blog uses strikethroughs, and everything for the rest of the homepage had a strikethrough as well.

Not sure how to do this quickly and easily in your PHP code, or I’d give you the bugfix for it myself…

  45. Neil 02.28.07 / 10pm
    45

One other quick request — it would be nice to have an option under Presentation to change the menubar sort order for Pages… :)

  46. Nalin 02.28.07 / 11pm
    46

Mosey, you need to create a template that uses UTW to display more information on a tag and then use it to create the Tag page. You should read up more about it on UTW’s site and http://codex.wordpress.org/Pages#Page_Templates. UTW, actually comes with these templates as examples.

Neil, get_excerpt() comes from the original Hemingway theme. I will look into it and see what I can do with my limited PHP skills. Also, I am looking to incorporate a lot more options to make this theme more customizable. Thanks for the ideas.

  47. Mosey 03.01.07 / 5am
    47

Hi Nalin, thanks for your reply - I’ll try again esp. with the link. :) I had had a look at creating tag.php and tags.php - the latter I’ve done successfully but was quite confused by ‘tag.php’.

Re: Menubar sort - I changed the template code to since it made more sense for me.

  48. Chris 03.01.07 / 7pm
    48

Nalin, have you seen the way Nicolo incorporates the comments in his theme at jek2k? He uses a second dropdown box (like the navigation menu you have at the top). Would you happen to know how to implement this with HemingwayEx?

  49. Simon 03.01.07 / 9pm
    49

Wonderful theme - thank you. I’ve been playing around with it a bit and have the following problem: The navigation-javascript does not work on my site - at least not online. It does work an Xampp and the one on your site also works for me - any idea what I could have messed up?

  50. Nalin 03.01.07 / 10pm
    50

Chris, It would be similar to the way the slidebar has been implemented in this theme and on the site. You can go through the site and try to do that. I might add an option to allow that in a future release.

Simon, don’t really know how to help you out there…

  51. Simon 03.02.07 / 10am
    51

Thankks for the quick reply - I’ll try to find out myself.

Do you know where I can change the css for links? I couldn’t find it in the css …

  52. aVirulence 03.02.07 / 11am
    52

Hey, do you have any idea why the lightbox plug-ins don’t work when I use your great theme?

  53. Tudor 03.02.07 / 2pm
    53

    Hi,
very nice theme. i love it.
is there a way to use four boxes at the bottom instead of three?

  54. Nalin 03.02.07 / 2pm
    54

Simon, you will have to edit Style.css to add whatever CSS properties you need in the theme. If it’s the custom theme that you are using, edit white.css

aVirulence, I think it might be some conflict of javascripts. I will make sure the next release has the latest versions.

Tudor, You will have to edit functions.php and dynamic_bottombar.php in the theme for that. Also, having different number of blocks in sliderbar and bottombar would mean that you would have to add more stuff in style.css

  55. Mosey 03.03.07 / 9am
    55

Hello! Me again… I’m afraid I’m still extremely stuck as to my previous question about how to get http://www.mysite.com/tag/tag-name working. If you wouldn’t mind doing a quick walkthrough I’d be very grateful. As far as I can understand it, what Imust do is to create tag.php - using an existing template. However, then I’m lost as to what php code I should use to ensure that the list of post displays.
    Thanks!

  56. Simon 03.03.07 / 6pm
    56

Sorry to bather you once again. Two questions:

Do you know, why I can’t import You-Tube-Videos on the first page? It works fine when you go to the single-post-page.

Is there a way to change the CSS of the Top Navigation without also changing the bottom blocks?

Thanks again for the great support here and via email.

(by the way: the Javascript for the navigation suddenly worked without me doing anything conciously about it …)

  57. Nalin 03.03.07 / 8pm
    57

Mosey, I have sent you the templates that I use for my site. See what you can do with them.

Simon, I think it’s the excerpt function that cuts out some of the HTML required to display the embedded object. You might want to increase the length of the excerpt. Also, you can duplicate all code related to ancillary and rename it to ancillary_x and use one for slidebar and other for bottombar.

  58. IEon 03.04.07 / 1am
    58

I’m currently using your theme and love it. Btw, it took quite a while, but I still cannot work out tag archive like yours here.

  59. Mosey 03.04.07 / 8am
    59

Nalin - thank you for sending the files :) however, I’m afraid I didn’t actually receive them (this is to the @yahoo.com email address?) - they may have gone straight into the bulk mail section which I generally delete without a second glance. Sorry! >_

  60. IEon 03.04.07 / 6pm
    60

In case of IE6, navigation slider button has the black color and the text is not visible even when I use white.css. It looks in white color in Firefox or other browsers though. Can u help me here along with the tag archive template?

  61. Nalin 03.04.07 / 10pm
    61

IEon, I have updated the theme. I think it address most of your issues.

Mosey, I see that you got the email this time and everything seems to be working out fine for you.

  62. aVirulence 03.05.07 / 6am
    62

Hi Nalin. First of all, thanks for another update. However, this update has killed my blog ;)

Only the title and slidebar is shown, which doesn’t seem correct to me.. This only happened after I had re-arranged the blocks a bit. Before, but after the update, the ‘read on’ links all referred to the About page instead of to the article.

  63. Nalin 03.05.07 / 8am
    63

Did u reset all the settings as I mentioned ? I think I have figured out the problem that is shows About page on all pages. Make sure that you reset your settings and don’t keep the about page block in Slidebar. Keep it only in Bottombar. I will fix the release and make the download link available again soon.

  64. Nalin 03.05.07 / 9am
    64

I have fixed the minor bugs and the release is again available for download. If you are upgrading, please make sure that you read the upgrade steps.

  65. aVirulence 03.05.07 / 9am
    65

    Hi Nalin,

I’m sorry, I can’t understand why I missed the important upgrade part, but it works after resetting the preferences. The Lightbox plug-in works now too. The about page doesn’t show up anymore when you click ‘read on’. Thanks

  66. Mosey 03.06.07 / 9am
    66

Nalin - thank you! :D Yes it has worked out fine for me. I don’t really know how else to thank you at the moment apart from giving you a big thumb’s up!

p/s: Now going to have see what I edited in the main files before I upgrade hehe :)

  67. Mosey 03.07.07 / 11pm
    67

    Hi again,
I was just wondering how easy it is to add a new block? :)
    Thanks!

  68. Nalin 03.07.07 / 11pm
    68

Go into HemingwayEx/blocks. All the php files that are used as blocks are lying there. You can create a block of your own and then add it to the list of Available blocks by going to the HemingwayEx Options page.

So, as long as you can code simple php, you can go ahead and add blocks easily.

  69. Chris 03.08.07 / 10pm
    69

Nalin, I found a little display issue when viewing a HemingwayEx site on a Mac. I’ve detailed the issue and put pictures here.

  70. Nalin 03.12.07 / 10am
    70

Chris, I’ll see what I can do about it.

    71

Nalin, I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeee your theme. I added a left sidebar too. That might be a nice option for your next release. To have one that could beactivated just like your OPEN Navigation one. Tres cool. Cant wait to see the next version.

Been tinkering with colors, anyone know where in the style sheet the orange color header is? Orange is not what I want to use. :)

  72. Daniel 03.12.07 / 11pm
    72

Nalin, thanks for this great theme. I tried to embedd a videolink to youtube. But it did not work! I did it as suggested by Wordpress. Can you give me a hint (I am only an amateur!)

  73. Flick 03.13.07 / 12am
    73

I’ve only just seen the numbered comments… now I *really* feel compelled to upgrade :)

  74. Nalin 03.13.07 / 11am

Daniel, Look at this post. I have embedded the video successfully. If it’s not showing up on the homepage of the blog, I guess it’s because of the excerpt length limit.

Flick, If it’s just the comments you are interested in, goto style.css and get the css for “counter” and then look up comments.php to see the edited code.

hi nalin, I tested your theme on your site but I keep getting this error:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected $end in C:\wamp\www\wp-content\themes\hemingwayEx\functions.php on line 690

how can I repair it? (I’m using mozilla firefox latest version)

    Thanks, great work!

I think it’s because of the use of short tags in php. I tried to get rid of them, but i might have missed something. Also, please make sure that u have v0.95 beta. You can google and learn more about php short tags and how to enable support for them in xampp.

Thanks for the info, Nalin - I’ll take a look later on today. :)

p/s: Re: new blocks, I’ve put in a block for Wp-Polls based on Recent comments I think. Not sure if anyone is interested in it at all.

I was wondering… which plugin are you using to embed the Youtube video? :)

p/s: I find Short Excerpts also meansWp-Polls isn’t displayed properly (leaving only the [poll=blah] tag) when viewed on the frontpage.

Nalin, I’m very new to this sort of web development. My current issue is the quest for the static page as the index or main page that readers will see. I’ve tried a couple techniques from the codex but I’m having particular difficulty applying it to this template. Can you offer any assistance?

Could you please change the yellow in the navigation ? Coz it sucks

Lol, no need to listen to Arjun. I’m changing mine to red, but no need to change the template. It is what Nalin likes, and if you don’t like it, there are like 5 things to change to get a new color.

Flick, I am not using any plug-in to embed the youtube vids. Next to each video, is HTML code, that I just c-C-c-V into the post.

James, I am not really sure how I can help here. I guess, you can take the code from the page.php and use it to replace the code on the index.php that displays two posts. You need to know a bit of php for that.

Arjun, I think there must be something wrong with the monitor, cause this color isn’t yellow, it’s orange. I can’t satisfy everyone’s preferences, but in my next release I will try and come up with more custom css files so that you could switch between colors like blue, red, green etc

Chris, I can’t get hold of a mac to debug that issue with the nav, so that is something that might not be fixed in the next release….

Nalin: The embed code seems to go all funny when I paste it directly into the visual editor (code tab), which is apparently a small bug with the TinyMCE editor that may have been fixed in the main version but not the WP version as yet. :)

mumbles, I thought about adding widget support, but this theme will then have six sidebars then and that would make using it more complicated.

For now, I have decided not to add widget support.

I’ve been trying to optimise my site recently and have discovered that as I use lots of plugins, a large number of js files are slowing down the load time. I know that Wordpress 2.1 comes packaged with prototype, scriptalicious etc. in the wp-includes folder so was wondering if removing it from the Hemingwayex folder would have any adverse effects on the layout. Thanks :)

Sorry about the multiple comments - please could you combine them into one? I’ve checked the js … its main the prototype.js file I’m wondering about as scriptaculous isn’t loaded elsewhere.

HemingwayEx is a simple extension of Hemingway theme for Wordpress blogs. The authort has tried to keep the original essence of the Hemingway theme, but added some new features and fixed some small issues.

Flick: I’ll look into this and see what I can do. I have already compressed the js files.

Jase: Currently, I am not planning on adding widget support as that would mean that user would have to take care of 6 separate sidebars. Also, whats been implemented by the original author, is more or less like widgets.

There are still a lot of short open tags in at least the functions.php, you should remove them, most hosters don’t (or shouldn’t) allow short open tags.

This theme is excellent and I used this theme for one of my website but I just noticed that in the inner page like “categories” and “archieves” there was no image preview in the list. There is only text in the list. My requirement is to have the same list as we have in the main page. How would this possible?

    waiting for your urgent response.

    Thanks

It’ll be HemingwayEx. Thanks a lot to Nalin Makar for his amazing work.

    hi
i absolutely love this theme. it’s beautiful and uncluttered. i have a problem however with the slidebar/ bottom panel. when i drag the ‘category listing’ block to the slidebar or bottom panel pane in the hemingwayex options, it shows up on the site with this under it in red:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: wp_list_categories() in /data/members/paid/k/e/kenedwards.org.uk/htdocs/www/notes/wp-content/themes/hemingwayEx/blocks/category_listing.php on line 3

could possibly explain (preferably with as little techspeak as possible- i’m a bit of a coding idiot) how i can fix this.

it’s a great theme and i want to keep it, but for accessibilty and navigation in the future i will need to have a ctegory listing

    many thanks

Hi Nalin Thanks for a great theme. Just wondering is it possible to make it 4 posts on the first page and what code I would change to do that?

    106

having checked various browsers - i now find that in safari, the posts don’t show up at all, and in omniweb the posts are laid out vertically, not side by side.

do you think i should delete the theme and re-install it

    many thanks

  107. ken 04.27.07 / 7am
    107

well, i deleted the theme and re-installed it, and it’s fixed the problem with other browsers, but i still can’t get the category listing block to work - and i really need those post categories

  108. Nalin 04.28.07 / 1am
    108

Ken, I think you are getting that error because wp_list_categories() is only available in WP 2.1 or newer. Please upgrade your wp software or modify the block to use older deprecated functions. You can find more information at http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/wp_list_categories.

Kellie, It is possible to make it such that it displays four posts. You will have to edit index.php and some css. I am sorry but I really can’t detail out the steps. The best way to go about it is to just pick up different variants of Hemingway and hack away… :-)

And I just noticed that the comment numbers screw up the comments… will fix this soon… have been wanting to come out with a new release, but I just can’t seem to find the time…

Is it possible to keep the slidebar static. Meaning to keep it visible all the time so you don’t have to click on the navigation button?

  110. Nalin 04.28.07 / 9pm
    110

Gjergji, I think that would be quite easy….

Make the following changes in index.php:
    1. Remove
    <div class=”right” id=”silderButton”>
    <a class=”nav” id=”openSlidebar” href=”javascript:void(0);” title=”Show navigation” rel=”nofollow”>Open Navigation</a>
    <a class=”nav” id=”closeSlidebar” href=”javascript:void(0);” title=”Hide navigation” style=”display:none;” rel=”nofollow”>Close navigation</a>
    </div>
    2. Look for <div id=”slidebar” style=”display:none;”> and remove style=”display:none;”

    That should do it.
