Welcome back Nalin !
Just like the title of my last post, I departed from the blogosphere. Just don’t know why but haven’t been able to sit down and write anything for the last couple of months. Even today, I wrote the first line of this entry and then wasted 45 mins doing something or the other before I made myself sit down again.
Anyway, a lot has happened at my end in the last couple of months. I had two offers of job and I made the obvious choice and moved to Sunnyvale, CA. Have been working for VMware as a QA Engineer II and been learning a lot of new things. It’s just (almost) the kind of work I would have liked to get into. Lots of coding amongst other things. And everything related to Java.
Sunnyvale is a nice place to stay. A lot of Indian Restaurants here… which means I almost always eat out… which in turn means I have put on a lot of weight… have to start working it off soon before things get from bad to worse.
Also, I have rented a lovely 2 Bed 2 Bath apartment with a roomie that I did my Master’s with. Furnished my room just the way I wanted. Bought a TV and a couch for the drawing room…. just what’s needed… will post the pics sometime soon…
And bought my first car… a new 2007 Toyota Camry, that I love to drive… Nice to have my very own car…
I am pretty much settled here now. The weekdays are way too busy and the weekends get boring at times… but life is good… Get by the weekends by watching movies and sleeping… the last two weekends were really nice. Went to Las Vegas and Chicago…
ok… will go get some sleep now… take care peeps…
Quota in Private Sector ?
There is an article in TOI about PM proposing quota for jobs in private sector.
Where is India heading with all this ? You just can’t keep on bringing in reservations into every field and every sector. First reservations are brought in and then the allocated quota is increased. Quota for government jobs is for the government to decide, but why are they imposing all these restrictions on the private sector ? It’s already bad enough that people who are not good enough are passing out from engineering and medical colleges, and now you want the same thing happening to private sector too…
One of the major reasons why public sector is lagging far behind the private sector is the fact that there is reservation and quotas in public sector. Whatever the government funds, be it industries, companies, small businesses, colleges etc., government can/should decide how it wants to handle it. But why should it meddle with the private sector ? The driving force behind private sector companies is to increase profits and this is something that can not be expected if they start employing sub-standard workforce.
As far as I know, nothing much has happened by bringing in this whole system. There have been opportunities created for people from SC/ST and OBC backgrounds, but mostly they have not been utilised properly.
We should be looking at educating the best of the human resource we have and invest in those that will return the goods. You don’t want doctors who just manage to get into a medical college because they qualified quota. They are a danger to society. You don’t want engineers who aren’t creative or whose knowledge base is not sound enough.
I for one believe that everyone has his/her own place in this world. If someone is not qualified enough to do a job, there is no use putting him up to it. The idea should never be to support SC/ST or OBCs… it should be to support economically backward people. Give aid to people who need it to goto good schools and colleges. Give aid to these people to prepare for getting into such places. Don’t just let them in when they don’t deserve it.
I am totally against this move of the government to bring in job quotas in the private sector. People in industries and companies work in groups and teams. How are people expected to work with those who they cant consider their peers ??
Again, the idea should not be to make it easy for these people to get jobs in private sector or seats in colleges. The idea should be to help them reach a point where they can, on their own, get these jobs and admissions.
p.s. I have no issues with people from SC/ST/OBC backgrounds, but I will never be able to fully respect a person who used his SC/ST/OBC status to get an admission or a job.
